Window Shutters & Home Improvements

We did it again- another simple, inexpensive home improvement that I believe we get to enjoy and get use out of but also one that improves home value.  This one makes it look like a million dollar improvement without the expensive price tag.  In the fall we decided to get shutters for our bedroom window which overlooks the front of our house and faces SouthEast so we get a lot of sun.  The window is an odd shape- extremely odd shape and after months of dealing with everything possible- wood blinds, shades, tin foil (kidding), and trying to get custom blinds made, I talked with an installer/measurer for Costco who suggested shutters.  That was the best advice I had gotten despite talking with three different designers.  (the pics here will show you the odd shape)

So, I talked with my favorite salesman and expert at Home Depot, Westminster, Colorado– Amy Valdez.  She is simply awesome!  She works in the flooring department but does the advice and order for blinds, shades, and shutters too.  She referred me to a sale they were having at the time of almost 20% off if we do Norman shutters (their dealer for shutters).  We decided to take the leap and got the bedroom window done.  Because all our windows upstairs have wood blinds and the wood trim and wood doors, we went with a stained shutter to match the wood.  It looked amazing and it is so functional.  What we had before were room darkening curtains thumbtacked to the walls to keep the light out and a sheer curtain over that.  It looked quite “dormroom-like”.  I am glad we grew up and got the shutters.

So, since we liked those we decided to do our front living area which overlooks the front of the house too.  We went with an off-white this time and again, just adding these in place of the sheer curtains which were there since we moved in four years ago- what a difference!   We not have the option to get some privacy and can still get the same light filtering.  These shutters in our bedroom and living room have also helped with heating costs.  I am very impressed and they really open your room up.  I would recommend these shutters especially if you have odd-shape windows because there is no way to do wood blinds or honeycomb that offer the same flexibility and ability to manipulate for more light or less light.   The prices are just right as well.  Shutters can be expensive if you go with Hunter-Douglas or high end stores but with Norman, you get a great warranty backed up by the reputation of Home Depot, and the same quality for a lot less!  The entire thing (both rooms and the amount of windows) ran us a half the price tag I was quoted by Costco home furnishings and it was all under $3500!  So for a home improvement, this is a good deal.  If you do it when Home Depot is running 20% off, you will get an ever bigger discount.  So watch for the sales and give my friends at Home Depot a call- ask for Amy if you call the one in Westminster.  Tell her I sent you. The salesman at Norman Shutters, Mark Locken, is also great and they do a good job.  Happy Home Furnishing!
