DIY Fragrance Stones for Essential Oils

I got this recipe from my friend Barb’s blog, Mom Off Track, and I have to give her and Sarah all the credit.  Sarah blogs at Moose and Tater and has some amazing posts and recipes for essentials too.  I got the idea and recipe from them and I use these stones for so many things.  Now that I use essential oils, I find them invaluable to have in the house and on all the trips I go on, so wanted to share here.

2015-12-24-21.46.27.jpg.jpegFragrance Stones are a must to have around any home along with essential oils, of course!  I use my stones in the garbage can, the washer, the garbage disposal, and for a bath when you are on the road and don’t have bath salts.  I love my fragrance stone when showering too — so great when you are feeling under the weather to put a drop of Eucalyptus and a drop of Peppermint and just breathe it all in!   I do this for the kids too when they are sniffling.  It works, and it’s so simple to make fragrance stones.  You can do this!  I promise.

  1.  Buy or get a silicone mold – it will not work with metal ones.  I got mine on amazon, but others have reported getting them at Michael’s or other craft stores.2015-12-24-21.42.46.jpg.jpeg
  2. Here is the recipe (makes about 25-30 small stones as seen in my picture) – double or triple it if you want more: 1/4 cup water to 1 cup of baking soda.  Mix it together by hand and make sure it is NOT runny or watery or they will break apart and crumble. You can even add water as you go so you do not add in too much. The drier the better.20151224_173058.jpg3. Place molds in a preheated oven (400 degrees) for about 25 minutes, and pull them out of the molds after cooled.  These make great gifts too with a bottle of essential oil.  I love, love my fragrance stones and give them out to my friends too!

2015-12-24-21.48.42.jpg.jpegUses for Fragrance Stones:  Put your favorite oils on these stones and use as you wish.  Here are some suggestions:

  1. Place one in your garbage can with purification essential oil and lemon (one drop each).
  2. Place one in your washer machine when it stinks to clean it- place 2 drops of purification on the stone,
  3. When I had a particularly difficult garbage disposal smell, I put lemon, peppermint and purification (1 drop each) and let it dissolve in there with hot water.
  4. You can put one stone in your car to get rid of a hard to find or get rid of an odor– use lavender and purification.
  5. You can put in stinky shoes and remove before wear, but my favorite uses are to bathe with them to get a good smell in the morning, or just wake up.  I used it in the kids’ steam shower when they were sniffling.  The best oils for colds are Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Wintergreen, and Lemon combo, but I think Eucalyptus can do the great job alone too.
  6. I like to take these on travel with me and put them in baths to relax or unwind. One drop of Lavender, and one of stress away and you are guaranteed a good night’s sleep in a loud hotel room.*

I am so glad Barb and Sarah introduced me to fragrance stones because they are wonderful and I love to have them on hand always.  I also give them away at craft events.  I hope you will find them useful too!

DIY Deodorant Naturally

Did you read what is in your deodorant, lately?  Seriously, do it! Here is what was in mine and I have been fighting a rash for several years now:

wpid-20151101_155421.jpgFor a decade now I have wanted to get away from chemical deodorants, but I feel I stink and never had time to make my own deodorant. Well, if I can make my own this easily, trust me, you can too!   And I’d pick this deodorant application over higher risk of cancer and clogged ducts any day.  If you are planning to sweat a lot during the day, I recommend taking some of this in a small travel-size jar or container with you where you go – gym, work, etc., and you can re-apply.  But, the statement that natural deodorants make you stink is simply not true.

wpid-20151103_204753.jpgI want to credit these two blogs because I used the recipes I found here & here as a base and then modified for what worked for me.  I did several different iterations and am planning to do one without baking soda next (I will update when I do).  As far as adding essential oils, if you want to, the sky is the limit on which ones you can add. Whatever you do, remember, add what you want to smell like all day because the scents will be with you all day.  It is divine when you pick some scents you love and the ones that are known to fight odors.  NOTE: When you apply it, apply small amounts, because both of these melt on contact with your skin.  Be careful slipping clothes over your head, but these leave less marks than regular deo.

wpid-20151109_184801.jpgSo, let’s get started.  You will need the following:

  • Virgin or Pure Coconut Oil (It is clumpy and hard) and you can get this at a health food store, online at amazon, or at a grocery store.
  • Organic shea butter- get the pure, organic blend (for recipe #1),
  • Organic Arrowroot Starch (you can get it at all health food stores)
  • Baking Soda (run of the mill arm and hammer will do- if you want to eliminate it, stay tuned for a different recipe)
  • Pure Essential oils of your choice from Young Living (get them discounted from me, here)
  • I chose Lavender, Lemon and Tea Tree for my first one, and it smelled good and keeps the stink away.  I hear Bergamot is an amazing oil for the skin and I am planning to order it.  If you have a rash or something else you are combating, you can add in purification or Melrose too.  I had a skin rash from deodorant and have a rash oil mix I use with Melrose, Purification, and Cypress, and that stuff is amazing too!  Get your essential oils here at 24% off, and so many freebies through me!
  • For the second one, I used the following essential oils: Melrose, Lavender, Cypress, Lemon, and Tea Tree.
  • For the third recipe (soon to be posted), you may need raw natural honey as well in place of the baking soda, so stay tuned.

wpid-20151102_203550.jpgRecipe 1:  Use a mason jar, put in 2 tbs of Coconut Oil, 3 tbs spoons of arrowroot, 2 or less tablespoons of baking soda, and my favorite- 2 tbs scented or unscented shea butter.   Mix the coconut oil and shea butter together and melt in the mason jar.  I didn’t have a mason jar at the time, so used a small Corning(c) bowl. I placed the bowl over light heat and it melted.  Then I stirred in the baking soda and arrowroot, and stirred and kept over heat until the clumps disappeared.  I added lemon essential oil (3 drops), tea tree (3 drops), and 5 drops of lavender while it was still melted and stirred it.kept this stored in a cool place overnight, and voila! In the morning, had homemade deodorant.  I apply it with a stick and with small amounts only. Keep in mind that you can get empty deodorant cases at, and can fill them, and let them cool too.  For summer months, you can store in a cooler or fridge.

wpid-20151108_185822.jpgRecipe 2: This time I had a mason jar on hand, and tried a different recipe, without shea butter.  I used 1/3 cups of coconut oil, 1/3 cups for arrowroot and only 1 Tbsp of baking soda.  This time I inserted the entire mason jar with lid off into boiling water, and let it melt.  I stirred it all together with the following essential oils: 5 drops lavender, 3 drops tea tree, 3 drops melrose, 2 drops lemon, and 3 drops of Cypress.  It smelled so good.  I let it set overnight, and used it the next morning. This mixture was amazing too!  I used it twice already, and it works great.  Again, bring a travel jar or two with you when you travel and keep it at work or in your gym bag if you think you will need it after a rigorous workout.

Recipe 3:  Recipe testing complete.  Check out my new post on it.  

  • Pure Coconut Oil – 2 tbsp
  • Arrowroot (get it here) – 1 tsp
  • Shea butter (scented is better, but I used unscented)- 1 tablespoon
  • Beeswax pellets – 1 1/2 tbsp (buy your beeswax here)
  • Almond Oil (optional) – 1 tsp
  • Vitamin E- use the capsule if possible or 1 tsp
  • Essential Oils from Young Living – Lavender (8 drops),  Tea Tree (4 drops), Patchouli (very fragrant so only use 2-3 drops), and Purification (4 drops)   You can do any variations of oils depending on ailments, dry skin, rash, fungus, etc.   Get your oils here by using my links, and you get a 24% discount by becoming a member.

Melt the Coconut Oil, Shea Butter, and Beeswax on the stove.  I just melt it into a measuring cup for easier pouring, over low heat, stirring often.  Once melted, add in almond oil and vitamin E and arrowroot.  Stir, and remove from heat.  Add in the essential oils to your liking, and pour into a deodorant casing (be careful that it does not holes on the sides or it will fall through, OR into a jar, or container.

DIY Keep the Spiders Away, Naturally

14579133110_4041a5f688_zHalloween is over and so is the need for creepy, crawly friends and spider webs. You know they are everywhere, and now you can try this recipe at home, and naturally keep them away! Then, they will scurry to your neighbors’ house so share this recipe with them when they complain next.  It works! I used peppermint and not a single chomp of our pumpkins happened.  It just works and the scent/taste keep bugs away, naturally.  No need to call pest control over and over again.

I had no idea it was this easy – you can use concentrated oil without the water dilution as well.  You will need:  Young Living Peppermint Oil (see below how to get yours or contact me),  1 Qt Tap water, 4 drops of dish washing liquid and a spray bottle. That is it.  Mix it up, and spray where you see them the most, or near water sources. Repeat once a week and they will decrease over 2 weeks!  If you are going to spray in areas where you do not want dish soap, use plain water and peppermint oil only.  If you have kids constantly crawling or eating things off the floor where the dish soap potion can be sprayed, then I recommend the straight up peppermint oil and water solution.

DIY essential oil recipe – preserve a pumpkin

20151024_131638Got pumpkin?  Want to keep it fresh until Halloween, especially after carving?

Try this great DIY essential oil recipe to preserve carved creations:

Castile soap if you have it and 10 drops of peppermint essential oil from young living. If you don’t have castile soap (I didn’t at the time), you can use approx. 10 drops of peppermint oil mixed with white vinegar.  I mixed mine in a spray bottle and sprayed the insides of the pumpkins.

Pure peppermint oil imagehas anti-bacterial properties and will prevent or slow down rotting.  Also, the smell/taste of it repels squirrels and bunnies from digging into your carved creations for supper. Plus, and my favorite reason for this over bleach and water, this is all natural, smells better, and honestly, I thought the castile soap/peppermint potion was way better than vinegar and smells better to humans. Thankfully, it repels rodents.

You can spray this natural spray on the outside of your pumpkins too!  But be careful to NEVER spray Vinegar on grass, unless your intent is to kill said grass. You can also create your own spray bottle if you do not want to buy them pre-made. Check out Mom Off Track’s post on how to do this.

My recommendation is to make sure the pumpkins are on pavement, away from the grass, and then spray them especially if you use vinegar. Happy Carving and Happy Halloween!

My Top 10 List – There’s an oil for that!*

Just in time for Fall, and Halloween, and all things that go “bump” in the night, I got hooked on essential oils.  I had heard about them, but just didn’t have the energy “to go there.” Seriously, I thought, who has time for this and I cannot keep all the different blends, potions and recipes straight, and am still learning new things daily.  Initially it felt overwhelming.  But, ever since I opened the starter kit (a must have if you want to try out oils), I am addicted and with my handy potions book (as I call it), it is nice to be able to make different things and try to relieve pain, address a rash, or just relax.  During massages in the past, I experienced some essential oils, and they were great for what ailed me at the time, but I had no idea the various properties and uses for essential oils until I took the plunge myself.

I like to call this post “There’s an OIL for that” and these are my top 10 oils so far, and the list is growing daily.

LAVENDER (of course)-  lavender has been my favorite for sometime now.  I used to get it with massages, and it smells so good diffused with just about any oil.  The house smells great, and it is great for relaxation, sleep and a nice hot bath to relieve sore muscles.  Love my lavender.  It is good for allergies too.  Who knew?

4407850304_db8138c0aa_z2.  Thieves- Do you know the history of the oil named Thieves?  It used to be called the FOUR THIEVES.  It is not clear whether the history is correct or whether a guy surnamed “Forthaves” creating this blend back during the time of the plague, but it helped people, and kept the plague away, well, allegedly.  But, this blend is marvelous.  It is not a single oil but so many in one, and it is my new favorite, and diffused or applied directly or through a carrier oil (recommended), it works great to keep the germs away, clear the air, clean surfaces, and all.   I have used it directly for a sore throat (with peppermint) and to help with a minor rash.  My new favorite is the Thieves hand gel that we take on the road and the sprayer bottle so we can clean surfaces quickly and effectively.*  I absolutely love my Young Living(TM) Thieves and the entire line.

16966300232_f52eeabd89_z3.  R.C.- Combine the two above and R.C (a blend of oils), and mix in a sunflower or grape seed oil base and it makes for a great nightly application for kids and adults alike.  R.C. is a great oil during the fall sniffle season – congestion, allergies, and sinus, and it has worked well in our home for a few weeks now.  Does it prevent cold? I do not know.  I just know the house smells great, and I feel better and the kids are not waking me up all night due to night terrors. There’s an oil for that!  RC has helped me during a cold already, and I’ll probably keep it up as the winter gets going.

15046134936_11f0367862_k4. Stress Away–  Another blend I love, for which I bought some extra rollers, is the STRESS AWAY blend.  It really has a calming effect, whether I roll it on my wrists or just diffuse it.  One of the favorite blends for the kids at night is Dream Catcher, Stress Away and Lavender – so relaxing.  I use it too!  Helps me sleep like a baby and I generally do not sleep well.

8356408259_8fb89c5903_z5.  Peppermint –  Peppermint and Lemon are tied for me-  I love them both and they both have so many uses, but for headaches and body soreness, peppermint is a God send. When I had a sore throat and coughing, I drank it, and it relieved my sore throat instantly.*  It can also be mixed with herbal tea and thieves to relieve a sore throat.  I love peppermint in a bath with lavender and lemon to relieve congestion and pain.  The Peppermint is soothing on my muscles too when I was experiencing muscle soreness.  I woke up in the middle of the night once with a headache and rubbed one drop on my temples, and was able to relieve the headache and go back to sleep.

9662369021_ffbfe67924_z6.  DiGize- I have had stomach pain twice in the middle of the night – likely from indigestion or poor diet, and DiGize blend has helped me.  I rub 2 drops on the affected area, and try to go back to sleep. Now, if I had massive pain and symptoms of an appendix flare up, would I rub oil on it and suffer through it?  No way! I am going in, but what I have found is that more often than not, that which ails us is NOT life threatening.  The kids have growing pains, and DiGize has alleviated their pains and I think helps them sleep better.  I even tried this when I had minor cramping (ovulation), and it helped me relax and go to sleep. Generally I have to take pamprin or 2 advils.*

Lemon–   I absolutely love this oil which blends well with all the oils to diffuse or apply.  It helps as a cleaning agent with thieves, and helps the whole house smell great. At the office, I blend this with lavender and it smells fresh and keeps those microwave smells at bay.  I like putting lemon in with tea and it soothes too.  Lemon is versatile and its citrus smell is not strong or overpowering.  In combination with Peppermint and Lavender above, I have used this in a bath or diffused and it helps with allergies and sinuses.  Ahhh, breathe again!

Tangerine/Orange–  Love them both and they both have different uses, but orange and thieves just smells lovely together and with Thanksgiving approaching, you can have the combo diffusing for your guests, so they smell this and not all that stuff you cooked.  Tangerine is good for dizziness and vertigo along with peppermint and lavender.  I like diffusing them the most, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that I tried (ingested) Grapefruit water for the first time today and I may never go back to plain water again.  You can add a drop or two of these and grapefruit or lemon to a drink, and it’s quite refreshing and doesn’t taste bitter at all.

16304941704_80d83e91d9_z9.  Valor – It didn’t come with my kit, but it’s my new favorite, and combined with Joy, it is my new favorite diffused scent too.  Reduces stress, and muscle tension when applied, and stimulates the senses.  So many uses for Valor, and it is out of stock right now, so I am using Valor II.  It is a blue color and smells absolutely lovely when diffused and inhaled.  It has uplifted my spirits and when I was down, given me focus and energy.  I have anxiety sometimes when traveling, and I cannot wait to put the roller on, and take this one with me when I travel.  I loved valor and a sample of aroma siez I had for muscle pain.  It’s a good one to put in a massage oil.

5097849770_e60971abba_z10.  PanAway- speaking of muscle soreness, I had an incident back in September, and my quads were killing me.  I could see veins broken from the stress, and PanAway to the rescue!  All natural, and it helped within a day to get rid of the soreness.  I also got in the bath and did peppermint and lavender too and took 1 advil, but it helped relieve the pain immediately.  I used it with a roller ball on.  But you can use and mix with a carrier oil.  PanAway is strong, so be careful and keep away from the eyes.

I am a person of science, modern medicine, and most of all, evidence and data. I believe in evidence, and I think the oils are working for us.  I hope they can work for you, but do not substitute this for medical or urgent care, unless it works.  For me, we are treating it like Netty pot, taking a steam bath when congested, honey and lemon in herbal tea, and such.
